What Disaster Recovery is
Disaster Recovery is a strategy that allows you to protect your business from unexpected events, such as technical failures, fires or floods, that could disrupt operations.
With a Disaster Recovery plan, you can quickly restore essential services, minimizing downtime and ensuring service continuity even in critical situations.
What RPO and RTO are
When defining a Disaster Recovery plan, you need to consider 2 parameters:
- RPO (Recovery Point Objective): indicates the maximum acceptable time between the creation of data and its most recent backup. The higher the RPO, the more data you risk losing in the event of a failure.
- RTO (Recovery Time Objective): indicates the maximum amount of time you are willing to accept for restoring your services. A low RTO means that the system must become operational again very quickly.
Activating Disaster Recovery
To implement an effective Disaster Recovery plan, you need to follow some key steps:
- analyze the risks: identify possible emergency scenarios that could disrupt your business operations (hardware failures, ransomware, natural disasters, etc.);
- define your RPO and RTO: determine how much time you are willing to tolerate for restoring services (RTO) and how much data loss is acceptable (RPO);
- choose a solution: you can use Aruba Cloud services such as DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service), which allow you to replicate data across multiple data centers and initiate recovery with a simple click;
- configure the environment: set up the backup system, replication and failover rules according to your requirements;
- perform periodic tests: simulate a disaster and verify that the plan works as expected. With Aruba services, you can also perform tests independently through the management panel;
- document and update the plan: any changes to your infrastructure must be reflected in the plan to ensure that it remains effective over time.
