SRV record

An SRV record allows you to specify which server handles a particular service by indicating the service name, protocol type (TCP or UDP) and port to use. This type of record is often used to configure telephony services (SIP - Session Initiation Protocol) and Jabber messaging (XMPP - Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol).
The SRV record configuration requires: Host, Weight Port Target and Priority.

Host

The host defines the type of service and the protocol used (TCP or UDP) for the SRV record. It is structured as follows:
_servicetype._protocoltype.domainname.ext
For example:
_sip._tcp.domainname.ext
This field is required.

Weight Port Target

This field consists of three elements:

  • Weight: represents the weight, i.e. a relative preference between multiple records with the same priority; a higher value increases the likelihood that the server will be selected;
  • Port: indicates the TCP or UDP port on which the service is listening;
  • Target: specifies the name of the server that provides the service.
A complete example could be:
5 80 www.domainname.ext
This field is required.
