Importing an Amazon virtual machine to a VMware Cloud Server
You can import an Amazon EC2 instance to a VMware Cloud Server by exporting it in VMware format and using the resulting virtual disk to create the VMware Cloud Server.
The procedure involves:
- exporting the Amazon EC2 instance in VMware format;
- uploading the virtual disk to the FTP space;
- checking the compatibility of the virtual disk;
- creating the VMware Cloud Server using the virtual disk.
Exporting the Amazon EC2 virtual machine
Use the Amazon Web Services VM Import/Export service to export the Amazon EC2 instance as a virtual machine for a VMware environment, selecting the VMDK format.
Before proceeding, check the AWS documentation for the requirements and limitations that apply to exporting Amazon EC2 instances. Not all instances can be exported.
Uploading the virtual disk to the FTP space
Activate the
FTP service in the data center where you want to create the VMware Cloud Server and, using an FTP client, upload the virtual disk in .vmdk format obtained by exporting the Amazon EC2 instance to the FTP space.
After uploading the disk,
check the virtual disk compatibility before using it to create the VMware Cloud Server.
Creating the VMware Cloud Server
- Log in to the Control Panel and start creating a VMware Cloud Server;
- in 2. Choose Template, go to ENABLE FTP IMPORT;
- in 3. Select Resources, next to HD 1, go to CONNECT DISK;
- in the Choose the virtual disk to use window, select the .vmdk virtual disk previously uploaded to the FTP space;
- go to CONNECT;
- the virtual disk used as the first disk must be enabled to boot the operating system;
- complete the configuration and create the VMware Cloud Server.
After creating the VMware Cloud Server, you may need to reconfigure the operating system and network according to the virtual environment and the resources assigned to the new server.
