Prerequisites
To install an operating system from a virtual CD/DVD on a VMware Cloud Server:
- activate the FTP service in the data center where you want to create the VMware Cloud Server;
- using an FTP client, upload the ISO file of the operating system you want to install to the FTP space;
- make sure that the ISO image is bootable.
Creating a VMware Cloud Server without an operating system
- Log in to the Control Panel and start creating a VMware Cloud Server;
- in 2. Choose Template, go to ENABLE FTP IMPORT;
- in 3. Select Resources, set the size of HD 1 without connecting a virtual disk;
- the panel indicates that if you do not connect a virtual disk uploaded via FTP, a Cloud Server without an operating system will be created;
- complete the configuration and create the VMware Cloud Server.
Loading the ISO file into the virtual CD/DVD drive
- Go to the VMware Cloud Server details page;
- go to the Virtual CD/DVD Drive section and select LOAD;
- in the Select ISO image window, select the ISO file previously uploaded to the FTP space;
- go to LOAD;
- wait for the operation to complete: the ISO file will be displayed in the Virtual CD/DVD Drive.
Installing the operating system
- Shut down the VMware Cloud Server;
- if the server does not yet have an operating system and STOP cannot be used, use FORCE SWITCH OFF;
- access the VMware Cloud Server using the Recovery Console;
- switch on the VMware Cloud Server;
- when the server starts, it boots from the ISO file mounted in the virtual CD/DVD drive;
- use the Recovery Console to install the operating system;
- if required by the operating system, perform any necessary restarts to complete the installation.
What to do after installation
- Once the installation is complete, shut down the VMware Cloud Server;
- go to the server details page;
- in the Virtual CD/DVD Drive section, go to EJECT to remove the ISO file;
- this prevents the server from booting from the installation media again the next time it starts;
- switch on the VMware Cloud Server;
- access it using the Recovery Console and complete the configuration of the operating system, login credentials and network.
