1.1 VPC Network service

What is a VPC Network

A VPC Network is a segregated logical space that is independent of all other VPC Networks, even if they belong to the same Cloud account or to different Cloud accounts. A VPC Network works as a virtual data center and is used to create networks and Cloud resources such as Cloud Servers, Kubernetes clusters, and databases.
To create a Cloud resource, in addition to the VPC Network, you must also configure a subnet (to enable network communication) and a security group (to control inbound and outbound traffic).

Which services can be associated with a VPC Network

You can associate a VPC Network with Cloud Servers (VDC), Kubernetes clusters, and the DBaaS service.

VPC Network rules

  • you will only be prompted to create a VPC Network automatically if you do not already have one configured in the same Region;
  • the first VPC Network created (automatically or manually) is set as the default VPC Network;
  • you can change the default VPC Network by selecting one of the VPC Networks you have already created;
  • you cannot delete the default VPC Network;
  • you can associate one or more Cloud resources with a single VPC Network;
  • you can delete a VPC Network if:
    • it is not the default VPC Network;
    • it has no associated Cloud resources;
    • it has no subnets or security groups configured within it;
  • you cannot create multiple VPC Networks with the same name in the same Region.
The VPC Network service does not incur any additional costs.

Default VPC Network

You must always have at least one active VPC Network. The default VPC Network cannot be deleted.

The default VPC Network is identified by the DEFAULT badge displayed to the right of its name in the Virtual Private Cloud Network section.

When you create your first VPC Network, or a Cloud resource that requires one, it is automatically set as the default VPC Network.
If you have multiple VPC Networks, you can choose which one to set as the default using the edit procedure.

You can also choose to set a VPC Network as the default while creating it.
