1.5 Configuring the network interface of a Windows dedicated server

Prerequisites

  • To configure the network interface, you need the VLAN ID value, which you can find in the Links section of the virtual switch details page.
  • You must have activated/requested and tested the KVM or iDRAC service to configure the Windows server: during the procedure, you must disable the Ethernet network adapter before creating a new one, so the server will be disconnected from the public network.

Configuration summary

The main steps for configuring the server are:
  • activate and test the KVM or iDRAC service;
    • access the server and create a new Team;
    • this operation creates a new network adapter and disables TCP/IPv4 on the Ethernet network adapter;
    • configure the new network adapter as public;
  • create a network adapter for the SWaaS service using the VLAN ID value;
    • configure the network adapter with the required settings;
  • configure the second server.

Creating the new public network adapter

  • Access the server via KVM or iDRAC;
  • from Start, select Server Manager;
  • from the menu on the left, select Local Server;
  • in the PROPERTIES section, disable NIC Teaming;
  • select Disabled;
  • the NIC Teaming window will open;
  • in the TEAMS area, click the TASKS drop-down menu and select New Team;
  • in the New team window, enter a name for the new team in the Team name field and select the Ethernet interface;
  • this operation will disable Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) on the Ethernet network adapter;
  • confirm by clicking OK;
  • the server is now disconnected from the network. We recommend restarting the server;
  • access the NIC Teaming section again;
  • the team you previously created is displayed in the TEAMS section, while the Ethernet interface is displayed in the ADAPTERS AND INTERFACES section.

Configuring the new public network adapter

  • Go to Change adapter settings in the Network and Sharing Center;
  • two network adapters are displayed (Ethernet and the one you created);
  • you must configure the public network on the newly created network adapter;
  • click the new network adapter and select Properties;
  • select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4);
  • in the Properties window, select Use the following IP address;
  • configure the settings using the same values as the Ethernet adapter before it was disabled;
  • the server is now connected to the public network again and can be reached.

Creating the new network adapter for the SWaaS service

  • Access the server;
  • from Start, select Server Manager;
  • from the menu on the left, select Local Server;
  • in the PROPERTIES section, disable NIC Teaming;
  • select Disabled;
  • the NIC Teaming window will open;
  • in the ADAPTERS AND INTERFACES area, select the Team Interfaces tab;
  • click the TASKS drop-down menu and select Add interface;
  • the New team interface window will open;
  • enter a name for the interface and, in the Specific VLAN field, enter the VLAN ID value shown for the virtual switch link created in the Customer Area;
  • confirm by clicking OK;
  • two interfaces are now displayed in the ADAPTERS AND INTERFACES area.

Configuring the new network adapter for the SWaaS service

  • Go to Change adapter settings in the Network and Sharing Center;
  • three network adapters will be displayed (Ethernet, the public network adapter you created, and the network adapter dedicated to the SWaaS service);
  • you can configure the network adapter dedicated to the SWaaS service according to your requirements.

    Example:

    IP address 10 . 10 . 10 . 1
    Subnet mask 255 . 255 . 255 . 0
    There will be no gateway or DNS settings because this is not a public network. If you have set 10.10.10.1 as the IP address, you must use 10.10.10.2 on the second server.
