1.1 The Agentless Backup service

What the Agentless Backup service is

The Agentless Backup service allows you to back up resources such as volumes (Block Storage) or databases (DBaaS), without having to install specific software (an agent) within the resource itself. Backups are performed at the infrastructure level, protecting your data without requiring any changes to the operating system or application configuration.

Benefits

  • no agents or dedicated software need to be installed on the volume;
  • fast and consistent volume-level backups;
  • can be used with multiple volumes or clusters;
  • independent of the guest operating system, making it suitable for heterogeneous environments (Linux, Windows, etc.);
  • flexible restore to the same volume or a new volume.

Services that support Agentless Backup

You can activate the Agentless Backup service for the following services:

Backup types and where backups are stored

The type of backup performed depends on the option selected when creating the Agentless Backup:
  • On-demand backup: a Full backup is performed, creating a complete copy of the volume when the backup is started;
  • Scheduled backup: the backup type (Full and/or Incremental) depends on the backup policy associated with the volume.
For Incremental backups, the system records only the changes made since the previous Full backup, optimizing execution times and storage usage.

Within the IT3 data center, data is stored in a dedicated repository in the same data center and subsequently replicated to storage located in the other data centers. Once within the infrastructure, all data is redundant and distributed.
Data security is ensured through at-rest encryption using the AES-256 algorithm.

How long backups remain available and what retention is

Retention is the period of time during which a backup remains available as a restore point.

How retention is managed depends on the type of Agentless Backup created:
  • On-demand backup: you can manually specify a retention period from 1 to 30 days. If you do not specify a retention period, the backup will remain available until it is manually deleted using the Agentless Backup deletion procedure. Retention can only be defined when the backup is created.
  • Scheduled backup: retention is automatically determined by the backup policy associated with the volume. It cannot therefore be configured manually when activating the service.
When the specified retention period expires, backups are automatically deleted by the system.
