What is the encryption password
The encryption password is a password associated with a backup job and used to encrypt data stored in the vault. All backed-up data is encrypted using this password. This password is essential because:
- it ensures data security and confidentiality;
- it is required to perform restore operations;
- it cannot be recovered if lost.
Managing the encryption password and its limitations
The encryption password cannot be recovered. If you lose it, you will not be able to restore your data. You must store it securely.
The encryption password cannot be viewed or recovered from the EVault console.
You can only change it by modifying the backup job, but doing so does not allow you to access backups previously created using the old password.
- existing backups remain associated with the original password;
- new backups will use the new password;
- to restore previous backups, you must always use the password with which they were created.
When the encryption password must be assigned
The EVault service requires an encryption password to be assigned when creating a job. This password is necessary to perform the corresponding restore operation (either partial or full). The encryption password must be set in the following cases:
- when configuring a server using the automatic procedure, because the system automatically creates the CloudServerBackup job and requires an encryption password;
- when creating any job, regardless of the selected job type.
When the encryption password is required
The EVault console always requires the encryption password to access backed-up data and perform restore operations in the following cases:
- restoring data from the CloudServerBackup job;
- restoring data to the same server;
- restoring data to another server:
- the password of the source job is required to access the backups;
- a new password must be set for the job created on the destination server.
