1.1 Configuring the service

To connect your Microsoft 365 organization to the Veeam Service Provider Console backup service, follow these steps:
  • log in to the Veeam Service Provider Console using your Backup for Microsoft 365 account credentials (company\username_company and password);
  • click on the Configuration option at the top right;
  • in the left-hand menu, select Plugin Library;
  • on the page that appears, click on Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365;
  • in the Getting Started section, you will see the server assigned to you (with a Healthy status) for performing backups;
  • click on Organizations in the left-hand column;
    • you will access the section that allows you to connect your Microsoft 365 organization;
    • click on the + New option in the horizontal menu;
    • begin the configuration process following the steps displayed in the left-hand column:
      • Protected Services
        • select the Microsoft 365 services [1] you want to activate backup for;
        • click on Next;
      • Connection Settings
        • select the region where Microsoft 365 is active (unless there are specific cases, you can leave it as Default);
        • click on Next;
      • Application Settings
        • you must specify whether you want to connect your Microsoft 365 organization to the Veeam Service Provider Console by:
          • registering a new Azure AD application - Register a new Azure AD applications automatically (recommended choice);
            • in this case, you need to provide a name for the application - Application name;
          • using an existing Azure AD application - Use an existing Azure AD application;
        • you can check the option to allow the created application to enable export mode for SharePoint Web Parts;
        • click on Next;
      • Microsoft 365 Logon
        • Please note that the Verification status is set to Not verified;
        • copy the code displayed under the Copy code option;
        • click on the link provided (https:microsoft.com/devicelogin);
        • a Microsoft page will open;
          • enter the copied code and click Next;
          • log in using your Microsoft 365 credentials [2] and click Next;
          • if your Microsoft credentials require multi-factor authentication, you will be prompted;
          • a confirmation message Are you trying to sign in to Microsoft Azure CLI? will appear, click on Continue;
          • you will see the message Microsoft Azure Cross-platform Command Line Interface, you can close the screen;
        • now the Verification status will be set to Verified;
        • click on Next;
      • Summary
        • The summary of the chosen settings in the previous steps will be displayed;
        • click on Finish;
  • you will be taken back to the Organizations section;
  • the process of connecting your Microsoft 365 organization will be present in the list and will have the status Creating;
  • the operation takes a few minutes, and at the end, all information related to the created connection will be displayed.
  1. Microsoft Teams includes the Teams chat service, which can be included or excluded in the data to be protected. The backup service for Teams chats incurs additional costs that the customer must bear towards Microsoft, and therefore implies subscribing to a separate contract directly with Microsoft.
  2. Your Microsoft 365 credentials must have a Global Administrator or Owner role.
