What is a job
In Commvault, a
job represents an operation performed by the system, such as a backup, a restore or a management task. Whenever an operation is started, either manually or automatically, a job is generated to track its execution.
Jobs allow you to:
- monitor the status of ongoing operations;
- check the results of backups and restores;
- analyze any errors or issues.
How to view all jobs
To view the complete list of jobs performed by the system:
- access Commvault Command Center;
- from the menu, select Jobs;
- the Jobs section provides different views for monitoring operations:
- Active jobs - displays jobs that are currently running or waiting to be executed;
- Job history - displays the history of completed jobs;
- Admin jobs - displays system and administrative operations.
The jobs table provides useful information, including:
- Job ID - unique identifier of the job;
- Operation - type of operation (for example, backup or restore);
- Status - job status (running, completed, failed, etc.);
- Server - server on which the job was performed;
- Progress - progress of the operation;
- Error description - error description, if available.
You can use the available filters to view jobs by time range (for example, the last 24 hours or the last month) or by status.
How to view a server's jobs
You can view the jobs associated with a specific server to monitor its backup activities in greater detail.
To view a server's jobs:
- access Commvault Command Center;
- from the menu, select Protect > Files;
- switch from the Overview tab to the Files tab;

- select the server name;
- open the Jobs tab to view the associated operations.

The
Jobs section displays only the jobs associated with the selected server.
You can filter the results by time range (for example, the last 24 hours or the last 7 days) or display only jobs with errors.
For each job, information is available such as:
- Operation - type of operation performed;
- Subclient - set of data involved in the backup;
- Size - amount of data processed;
- Status - job status (completed, failed, etc.);
- Error description - error details, if any.
This view allows you to quickly analyze a server's backup history and identify any issues.
Job statuses
Each job has a status that indicates its progress or result. Understanding job statuses allows you to quickly check whether operations have completed successfully or whether any problems have occurred.
The most common statuses are:
- Running - the job is currently running;
- Pending / Waiting / Queued - the job is waiting to be executed;
- Completed - the job has completed successfully;
- Completed with errors - the job has completed but with errors or items that were not backed up;
- Failed - the job did not complete successfully;
- Failed to start - the job could not start;
- Suspended - the job has been suspended.
If an error occurs, you can check the
Error description and
Error code columns or open the job details to investigate the problem further.
How to analyze a failed job
When a job ends with errors or warnings, you can analyze its details to identify the cause of the problem.
To analyze a job:
- access Commvault Command Center;
- go to the Jobs section or the server's Jobs tab;

- locate the job with Failed or Completed with errors status;
- select the job to open its details.
The job details provide various useful information:
- Error description - description of the error;
- Error code - code identifying the problem;
- Operation - type of operation performed;
- Subclient - data involved in the backup;
- Logs and details - technical information about job execution, useful for analyzing the cause of the error.
In many cases, the error message allows you to quickly identify the problem, for example:
- missing backup plan configuration (unprotected server);
- server connectivity issues;
- system configuration errors.
If the problem persists or the cause is unclear, we recommend using the job information (particularly the
Error code) to request
technical support.
