How to retire a server (Retire)

You can retire a server from Commvault management when it no longer needs to be protected, for example if it is decommissioned or permanently shut down, while keeping any existing backups available.

To change the server's protection settings without retiring it, you can modify the assigned backup plan.

To retire a server:
  • access Commvault Command Center;
  • from the menu, select Protect > Files;
  • switch from the Overview tab to the Files tab;

  • locate the server you want to retire and select the three-dot menu at the end of its row (in the Actions column);
  • select Retire;
  • confirm the operation by typing RETIRE and selecting RETIRE.
After the operation:
  • the server remains visible in the console but is no longer managed by the Cloud Backup service, and no new backups will be performed;
  • any existing backups remain available according to the retention period.

How to reconfigure a server (Reconfigure)

Reconfiguring a previously retired server allows you to reactivate it in the console, restoring communication with the Cloud Backup service.

This operation is only available if the connection agent is still installed and working correctly on the server.

To reconfigure a server:
  • access Commvault Command Center;
  • from the menu, select Protect > Files;
  • switch from the Overview tab to the Files tab;

  • locate the server you want to reconfigure and select the three-dot menu at the end of its row (in the Actions column);
  • select Reconfigure;
  • confirm the operation.
After the operation:
  • the server is configured again for the Cloud Backup service;
  • backups can be performed again according to the assigned backup plan;
  • any existing backups remain available according to the retention period.

How to delete a server (Delete)

Deleting a server permanently removes it from Commvault management.

This operation is irreversible. The connection agent installed on the server will no longer be recognized by the console. To reconnect the server, you must uninstall the existing connection agent and reinstall it to allow a new registration in the console.

To delete a server:
  • access Commvault Command Center;
  • from the menu, select Protect > Files;
  • switch from the Overview tab to the Files tab;

  • locate the server you want to delete and select the three-dot menu at the end of its row (in the Actions column);
  • select Delete;
  • confirm the operation by typing DELETE and selecting DELETE.
After the operation:
  • the server is permanently removed from the console;
  • you can no longer manage it or perform backup operations;
  • any existing backups remain available for restoration until the retention period expires, unless manually deleted.
