1.1 The Application Platform Cloud service

What is the Application Platform Cloud service

Application Platform Cloud is a PaaS (Platform as a Service) service that allows you to dynamically scale virtualized resources according to the actual requirements of your application.

PaaS is a category of Cloud Computing that provides application servers and intuitive tools for easily installing and managing applications. It is the ideal solution if your application does not constantly require the power of a Cloud Server or physical server, but you still need scalability, service separation, high availability, and ease of management.

The main strength of Application Platform Cloud is its flexibility: you can use a single platform compatible with PHP, Java, Ruby, .NET, Node.js, Python, and Docker, combining the benefits of IaaS infrastructure with those of a PaaS architecture. The system is based on Cloudlets, micro-instances with 128 MB of RAM and 400 MHz of CPU, which are automatically allocated according to the load of your application.

Application Platform is a new form of Cloud Hosting that is easy to use and configure: choose the application server, set up a high-availability environment with load balancing and multiple nodes, and pay only for the resources you actually use. You can activate the service in two ways: Pay-per-use, with usage-based billing, or package plan, with predefined resources and a fixed monthly fee.

Terms and their meaning

PaaS (Platform as a Service)
With a PaaS service, you can develop and test applications without having to purchase or directly manage the required hardware and software.
CaaS (Container as a Service)
A CaaS service allows you to use container-based platforms without having to directly manage hardware or software resources.
Cloudlet
A Cloudlet is the basic unit used to measure resources in Application Platform: it corresponds to 128 MB of RAM and 400 MHz of CPU. The platform uses Cloudlets to calculate the resources consumed by your application.
  • Reserved Cloudlet
These are resources reserved in advance: you pay for them even if they are not fully used.
  • Dynamic Cloudlet
The platform automatically scales resources according to the load: Cloudlets are activated only when required and deactivated when they are no longer needed.
Environment
An Environment hosts your application on Application Platform Cloud. You can configure it by choosing from different types of nodes, each with a specific role:
  • Balancing.
  • Application Servers.
  • Cache.
  • Databases (both SQL and NoSQL).
  • Additional Options (such as Storage, VPS, Build Node, and SSL certificates).
  • Docker Engine.
Overquota
Overquota occurs when you exceed the resources included in the selected package plan. You can choose how to manage these additional resources using one of two options:
  • Pay-per-use
Additional resources are calculated and billed according to the Pay-per-use model.
  • Avoid overquota
The system applies limits that prevent you from exceeding the resources included in the package. Restrictions may include:
    • a maximum number of Cloudlets available for each environment;
    • a maximum number of nodes per environment;
    • a reduction in the disk space available for each node.
Automatic clustering
The Marketplace provides ready-to-use templates that allow you to automatically create clusters for many common applications, such as MongoDB, MySQL, Kubernetes, WordPress, and others.
Marketplace
Application Platform Cloud provides users with the Marketplace, a dedicated area where you can select and install in just a few simple steps:
  • ready-to-use applications,
  • additional components (Add-Ons),
  • Docker containers.

Rules for creating or editing an Application Platform Cloud account

Below are all the conditions you must follow when creating or editing an Application Platform Cloud account.

When creating an account

  • If you choose a Pay-per-use plan, you will no longer be able to switch to a package plan.
  • The Prevent exceeding the quotas included in the plan. option is only available when creating the account and only for package plans.
  • The email address you enter must be unique: you cannot use the same address for multiple accounts.

When editing an account

  • If you switch from a package plan (Small, Medium, Large) to a Pay-per-use plan, you will not be able to switch back.
You cannot downgrade a package plan.
  • If you have exceeded the resources included in a package plan, you will no longer be able to select the Prevent exceeding the quotas included in the plan. option.
  • When editing an account, the email address must also be unique and must not already be used by another account.
  • If you have requested the deletion of an account with a package plan at the end of the prepaid period, you will no longer be able to change either the plan or the email address.
  • If you delete the account immediately (with either a package or Pay-per-use plan), the operation is final and irreversible.
