1.1 The DBaaS service

DBaaS service overview

With the Aruba Cloud DBaaS (Database as a Service) service, you can manage a database in the cloud without having to manage infrastructure configuration, updates, or backups.
This solution is ideal for supporting any type of business application, thanks to high performance, extensive resource availability, integrated security, and maximum compatibility. Using a database in the cloud helps you reduce costs and allows you to dedicate more resources to application development.

Engine Microsoft SQL Server MySQL
Databases unlimited unlimited
Users unlimited unlimited
Licenses from 4 to 16 [1] open source
Concurrent connections unlimited unlimited
vCPU from 4 to 16 from 1 to 32
RAM (GB) from 8 to 32 from 2 to 64
Storage (GB) from 10 to 100 from 10 to 100
Automatic backup [2] daily daily
Manual backups [3] unlimited unlimited
1. The number of Microsoft SQL Server licenses (not selectable) is linked to the number of vCPUs at a 1:1 ratio.
2. Automatic backups are free and are retained for 7 days.
3. Manual database backups are charged hourly based on the GB used.

Engine (database engine)

MySQL

  • Features
    MySQL is an open-source relational database management system. You can easily store, query, and modify data in a database. It also includes useful tools for designing and modeling the database structure. Its ease of use and high performance have made it one of the most popular database management systems.
  • Available versions
    MySQL 8.0
  • MySQL limitations
    You can only use the InnoDB engine for MySQL databases.

Microsoft SQL Server

  • Features:
    Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system. You can use it to develop both simple and complex applications, managing large volumes of data with high performance and high security standards. You can manage any type of project using the server edition that best suits your application.
  • Available versions:
    Microsoft SQL Server 2022 - Enterprise Edition
    Microsoft SQL Server 2022 - Standard Edition
    Microsoft SQL Server 2022 - Web Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server limitations:
    For unsupported features and services, see the official documentation.

Sizes

When creating the DBaaS, after selecting the engine (and the corresponding version), you must select a size from two types:
  • General Purpose - General Purpose sizes have a 1:2 vCPU-to-RAM ratio and are ideal if you want to use the database flexibly.

    Size vCPU RAM Microsoft SQL Server MySQL
    DBO1A2 1 2 GB — ●
    DBO2A4 2 4 GB — ●
    DBO4A8 4 8 GB ● ●
    DBO8A16 8 16 GB ● ●
    DBO12A24 12 24 GB ● ●
    DBO16A32 16 32 GB ● ●
    DBO24A48 24 48 GB — ●
    DBO32A64 32 64 GB — ●
  • RAM Oriented - RAM Oriented sizes have a 1:4 vCPU-to-RAM ratio and are suitable if you need greater computing power and high performance.

    Size vCPU RAM Microsoft SQL Server MySQL
    DBO1A4 1 4 GB — ●
    DBO2A8 2 8 GB — ●
    DBO4A16 4 16 GB ● ●
    DBO8A32 8 32 GB ● ●
    DBO16A64 16 64 GB — ●

Storage

Storage indicates the amount of space (including databases and backups) you want to associate with your DBaaS and has the following characteristics:
  • minimum size: 10 GB;
  • maximum size: 100 GB;
  • 1 GB increments.

Autoscaling

You cannot enable autoscaling if the storage size is set to 100 GB.

Autoscaling automatically expands the storage when the configured conditions are met. You can enable autoscaling to prevent the available space from running out: simply specify how many GB you want to add and when the storage should be expanded:
  • Remaining space: the threshold for the remaining free space. It must be lower than the storage size you selected;
  • Increment step: specifies how many GB you want to add when the threshold is reached, up to a maximum increment of 10 GB. The sum of the space already used and the configured automatic increment cannot exceed the 100 GB limit.

    If you select 30 GB of storage and enable autoscaling with a threshold of 2 GB and an increment of 5 GB, when 28 GB (30 GB - 2 GB) of storage is used, the system increases the storage to 33 GB (28 GB + 5 GB).
You can disable, enable, or change the autoscaling option at any time.

When the storage is automatically increased, the database is unavailable for a few minutes.

Permissions

You can assign one of the following three profiles to each user, depending on the operations you want to allow:

  read write delete
liteadmin ● ● ●
readonly ● — —
readwrite ● ● —

liteadmin

With this profile, you have full read, write, and delete permissions on the database:
  • you can read and modify data in tables;
  • you can insert new records;
  • you can create new tables, modify the structure of existing tables, and delete tables from the database.
Commands available for the liteadmin profile:

Microsoft SQL Server ALTER CREATE DEFAULT CREATE FUNCTION CREATE PROCEDURE CREATE RULE CREATE TABLE CREATE VIEW DELETE EXECUTE INSERT REFERENCES SELECT UPDATE VIEW DATABASE STATE
MySQL ALTER ALTER ROUTINE CREATE CREATE ROUTINE CREATE TEMPORARY TABLES CREATE VIEW DELETE DROP EXECUTE INDEX INSERT LOCK TABLES REFERENCES SELECT SHOW VIEW TRIGGER UPDATE

readonly

With this profile, you have read-only permissions on the database:
  • you can read all information in the database, but you cannot modify it in any way.
This profile is automatically assigned if there is insufficient credit to renew the service.

Commands available for the readonly profile:

Microsoft SQL Server SELECT
MySQL DELETE DROP SELECT SHOW VIEW

readwrite

With this profile, you have read and write permissions on the database:
  • you can insert, read, modify, and delete data (records) in tables;
  • you cannot create new tables, delete existing tables, or modify their structure.
Commands available for the readwrite profile:

Microsoft SQL Server DELETE INSERT SELECT UPDATE
MySQL ALTER CREATE TEMPORARY TABLES DELETE EXECUTE INDEX INSERT LOCK TABLES SELECT SHOW VIEW UPDATE
