02 Importing an image into the Image repository

What to know before importing an image

Before proceeding, make sure that:
  • the image is available in one of the formats supported by the service: QCOW2 (.qcow2) or RAW (.raw);
  • the image file can be accessed through a public URL, without authentication;
  • the SHA-256 checksum of the image file is available, as it is required to verify the file's integrity during import.
If importing the image causes the free storage allowance included in the Image repository to be exceeded, charges will apply to the storage space used beyond that allowance.

How to calculate the SHA-256 checksum of an image

To import an image into the Image repository, you must provide its SHA-256 checksum, which is used to verify the file's integrity. You can calculate the checksum of the image file using one of the following commands, depending on your device's operating system:
  • Windows (using PowerShell)

    Get-FileHash -Path "C:\Percorso\immagine.qcow2" -Algorithm SHA256

  • Linux (from the terminal)

    sha256sum /percorso/immagine.qcow2

  • macOS (from the terminal)

    shasum -a 256 /percorso/immagine.qcow2

Replace the paths shown in the examples with the path to the image file you want to import.
Copy the SHA-256 value returned by the command and enter it in the SHA field during the import procedure.

The checksum must be calculated on the same file that will be made available through the URL used for importing the image.

How to import an image into the Image repository

  • Log in to Aruba CMP;

      • you can assign one or more tags to the image (follow the tagging rules);
      • you can add a description;
      • select the destination project for the image; if you do not make a selection, the system assigns it to the default project;

        • allow the use of custom scripts through userData;
      • select the operating system type (Windows or Linux) and enter its version;
      • you can assign a PNG icon to the image;
      • select Next;
    • 4. Select file
      • in the Url field, enter the public URL of the image file you want to import;
      • in the SHA field, enter the SHA-256 checksum of the image file, which is used to verify its integrity at the end of the import process; if necessary, refer to the procedure for calculating the SHA-256 checksum;
      • select Next;
    • 5. Plan frequency
      • select Hourly and check the displayed cost;
      • select Next;
    • select Confirm in the sticky bar to start importing the image.
At the end of the procedure, a message confirms that the import request has been accepted and provides a See details link.
This confirmation does not mean that the import has been completed. You can check its status on the image detail page.

What to do after importing an image

Once the import is complete, the image is available in the Image repository and can be used to:
