VMware Cloud Server configuration procedure
There is a limit of 30 virtual machines (Cloud Servers and Cloud VPSs) that you can activate with your Cloud account. To activate more than 30, contact
customer support.
To create a VMware Cloud Server, proceed as follows:
- log in to Aruba CMP;
- from the menu, go to VMware on Aruba Cloud > Compute essential;
- in the VMware Cloud Server area, select Go to Control Panel;
- the Management window opens;
- select the data center where you want to create your VMware Cloud Server;
- go to CREATE NEW CLOUD SERVER;
- the New Cloud Server Configuration window opens;
- the creation procedure requires the following information:
- 1 - Choose Technology
- 2 - Choose Template
- select ENABLE FTP IMPORT only if you want to create the Cloud Server from a custom template;
- select one of the available preconfigured templates;
- if you have created one or more custom templates, the Custom templates option will also be available. Select it to choose which template to use;
- selecting a custom template takes you directly to the next step;
- by selecting Also configure a public IPv6 address, you will also have an IPv6 address in addition to the IPv4 address automatically assigned by the system (subject to a charge); the public IPv6 address is free and can only be activated when creating the VMware Cloud Server;
- 3 - Select Resources
- specify the number of virtual CPUs, the amount of RAM and the size of the primary disk;
- you can also:
- add one or more hard disks using ADD HD;
- keep the automatically assigned IP address or choose the IPv4 address using MANAGE IP;
- connect a virtual switch using CONNECT VIRTUAL SWITCH;
- 4 - Server Information
- assign a name to the VMware Cloud Server;
- 5 - Server Management Account
- enter the password you want to associate with the VMware Cloud Server;
- if you selected a Linux template, you can add an SSH key;
- Billing method
- select the billing type to apply to the VMware Cloud Server:
- hourly;
- monthly (30 days);
- annual.
- Go to CREATE NEW CLOUD SERVER. The Create New Cloud Server window opens; confirm with OK, CREATE CLOUD SERVER.
Billing type
The billing type selected for the VMware Cloud Server applies only to vCPU, RAM, HD and IPv4 resources (if automatically assigned) and to any Microsoft Windows Server licence. It does not change the billing of resources charged hourly (Virtual Switch and additional IP addresses) and/or by calendar month (such as Windows Server RDS and Microsoft SQL Server software licences).
For example, with annual billing for a VMware Cloud Server running Windows Server with vCPU, RAM, HD, a Microsoft SQL Server licence, Virtual Switch and an additional IP address (in addition to the automatically assigned primary IP address), you will pay:
- in advance (covering the annual period) for vCPU, RAM, HD, IPv4 and the Microsoft Windows Server licence;
- hourly for the Virtual Switch and additional IP address;
- by calendar month (at the beginning of each month) for the Microsoft SQL Server licence.
You can
change the billing type at any time.
Recommended best practices
- Restart the VMware Cloud Server after creating it.
- Regularly check your VMware Cloud Server statistics to monitor resource usage.
- Plan scheduled operations to optimise the performance of your VMware Cloud Server.
- Create a snapshot before installing software on your VMware Cloud Server, so that you have a copy of its contents in case of problems.
- Use the Cloud Backup service to protect the contents of your VMware Cloud Server.
- Configure the Cloud Monitoring service to check that your VMware Cloud Server is always reachable from the public network.
